Strength, Fire, and Fearlessness: Journey’s Senior Portrait Session

Some seniors are easy to describe in a single word. Journey is not one of them.

She’s a wrestler. She’s a firefighter. She’s strong, determined, and hardworking. But she’s also unapologetically herself—proving that toughness and femininity can exist side by side.

We started her senior portrait session at Oscar Smith High School, where wrestling has been a huge part of her story. To create authentic action shots, her friend Eugene volunteered to step onto the mat with her. What happened next was incredible.

Again and again, Journey launched him into the air with powerful throws and takedowns that left everyone watching impressed. It wasn’t staged strength—it was real strength. The kind that comes from countless hours of practice, discipline, and determination.

And yet, right there on the wrestling mat, she was still unmistakably Journey.

One of my favorite details from the session was her pink bedazzled wrestling shoes. They were the perfect reminder that she doesn’t have to choose between being fierce and being feminine. She gets to be both.

After the wrestling portraits, we headed back to the studio for a completely different look featuring her firefighter gear.

I wanted these images to feel as powerful as the role she has chosen to pursue, so we created dramatic lighting effects using colored gels on my strobes to simulate fire. A smoke machine added atmosphere while Journey’s mom worked behind the scenes, helping direct the smoke exactly where we needed it.

The result looked like something straight out of a movie.

Standing in her firefighter uniform, surrounded by glowing light and swirling smoke, Journey looked every bit as strong, capable, and fearless as she is in real life.

What I loved most about this session wasn’t the wrestling throws or the dramatic effects, though both were amazing. It was seeing all the different parts of who Journey is come together in one experience.

She is powerful.
She is driven.
She is feminine.
She is tough.

And she never tries to fit herself into just one box.

Watching her confidently step into each part of her story made this session unforgettable.

I can’t wait to see where life takes her next. If her determination, work ethic, and heart are any indication, she’s going to accomplish incredible things.
